Monotypes… A Monotypebabe Experience is a group exhibition showing monotype prints curated and co-produced by Lebogang Mogul Mabusela aka Monotypebabe. Monotypebabe was a recipient of the Young Womxn Studio Bursary sponsored by Sam Nhlengethwa, where she was awarded with studio space for three months at the Bag Factory. During this residency she brought her newly acquired portable print studio set up to the new studio space and used the residency to work on her art practice and her new curatorial scheme The Monotypebabe Curatorial.
Her bringing of her monotypebabe set up and materials stimulated an interaction with some local artist interested in challenging themselves to work smaller than A4 and with a medium they are not used to. During the three month period she worked with 17 artists including herself in developing ideas and images for works into monotype prints that are smaller than A4. There are many print studios in Johannesburg where most of them have a bigger size press, thus satisfying this popular norm that artworks need to be big for them to have an impact. “I am more interested in innovation and some type of "ghetto cleverness", for me being a printmaker means expressing my creative ideas through others. With the idea of wanting to see printmaking on an inventive and experimental level where I am trusting the artists to deliver, fulfill and challenge themselves.” These collaborations culminated in this body of work.
